The Snowy Owl of Earth (also found on planet Arkacia), with its striking white plumage, is exquisitely adapted for the Arctic. A diurnal creature (awake in the daytime), it hunts in the Arctic’s endless summer daylight, a rarity among owls, enhancing its ability to detect distant prey from perches or while hovering. With its large binocular forward-facing eyes, dense in photoreceptors, and a head rotating up to 270 degrees, it surveys wide areas with minimal movement, helping to maintain its snowy camouflage.
Furthermore, as with other owls, the flapping of is wings are nearly silent, often taking their quarry by complete surprise. The female builds feathered, or mossy nests on the ground, typically on elevated sites like hummocks or ridges in the tundra, where snow is less likely to accumulate. This provides not only a clear view of threats by other predators, but is conveniently close to the environments in which their prey (lemmings, and other small game) can be found. Like a precision telescope nested in a hidden observatory, the Snowy Owl has a superior edge over other owls in spotting prey across the boundless, treeless Arctic.
